The overarching vision of Ma Ka Hana Ka ‘Ike (MKHKI) is to increase Hāna’s self-sufficiency by providing meaningful learning opportunities that strengthen intergenerational relationships, environmental stewardship, cultural practices, and life skills, while meeting real and urgent community needs. Our approach can be summed up as returning youth to their rightful role as caretakers of their community.
MKHKI’s three main programs work in a holistic way—providing solutions to urgent issues while working to create systemic change that targets the root causes of these issues. Our Building Program installs handicap-access improvements for community members in need, while our Mahele Farm and Mālama Hāloa programs reintroduce healthy dietary and lifestyle choices, grounded in Hawaiian culture and connection to ‘āina (land). We provide services at no cost to low-income families, while our youth earn educational stipends and vocational skills training, changing the perpetuation of a low-income population in our isolated region. And we offer hands-on learning opportunities to youth who fail to thrive in the traditional academic setting, while providing our public school with an alternative educational approach that really works.

Poerava Ori Nui is motivated by the spirit of Aloha to share the little things that make Hawaii so special. Visitors come seeking simple fascinations to entertain their vacation in paradise. We offer a number of activities that will surely leave you with a lasting memory of how you did as the Hawaiians do.
See our Poerava Ori Nui Website to involve yourself with our ‘Cultural Indulgences’!
Lei-making:
You’ll absolutely be delighted when learning to make a lei the Hawaiian way. Exploring the various types of ti-leaf, you will learn the art of ti-leaf lei making. This lei will stay fresh with little preservation techniques, allowing you to proudly wear your handmade creation. Over time, the lei will dry and its color will fade, but it will never lose the significance and beauty of our experience together.
Haku:
“Haku,” the people’s crown, normally used to honor someone special during an occasion. The haku lei is an assortment of vibrant colors with breathtaking patterns of flowers and greenery. Poerava Ori Nui ensures the freshest natural resources for you to sew into your personalized haku for a lush tropical crown.
Ukulele:
Before we start strumming away, we’ll go over basic hand positions necessary to play the ukulele properly. Once we’ve got that down, the first ukulele chord will be just as easy as the next. With a little practice changing finger patterns between chords, you will be singing along to your first song in no time. You’ll be excited to return home to show off all you’ve learned on your vacation to Maui.
Hawaiian Hula:
Countless luau performances feature the art of hula and all its grace purely to entertain but overlook the true beauty that lay within. For every phrase, there’s a motion; for every motion tells a story. Poerava Ori Nui will bridge the gap between an angelic melody and elegant movement with understanding of the story behind the song. Step-by-step, you will learn the basic footwork and hand motions commonly used in hula. You’ll truly build a connection to this cultural memory in the ambiance of Aloha.
Tahitian Ori:
Who doesn’t want to sway as Tahitians do? The secrets we reveal to Tahiti’s hypnotizing hips will have you wanting more. It’s the perfect time for all women to truly explore their sassy but classy feminine side. Perhaps a light workout to end the day right. No matter the circumstance, every class will be a blast.

Magic Of Soil
“The Only Magic Material that Turns Death into Life.”
– SADHGURU
The Save Soil movement is about bringing humanity together to keep the magic of soil alive.
Soil is the basis of our lives. But…
Agriculture, deforestation, and other factors have degraded and eroded topsoil at alarming rates. Globally, 52% of agricultural land is already degraded. The planet is in crisis. If current rates of soil degradation continue, this would be the end of life as we know it.
Soil: A holistic solution
Almost every major ecological crisis is, to some degree or form, a consequence or symptom of the degradation of soil.Similarly, almost every environmental or environment-related pain point can be addressed by creating healthy soil.
It is, in fact, a fallacy to think we can address any one aspect of our environment without addressing the whole, because no aspect of the ecosystem functions in isolation. No solution is complete until we become conscious that life is one single complex phenomenon, all of which is happening in unison. In many ways, Soil is the underlying platform upon which life springs forth. If we fix soil, we have the best chance of fixing the whole.

SaveSoil.org
Aloha,
This is Mary Law… I am a resident of the Hana district and excited to be the local Save Soil representative here on Maui. Save Soil is a global initiative working to raise awareness of the need to press for incentives and laws that encourage improving soil organic matter and health. Currently we are organizing to help the public give input this fall into the US Farm Bill to improve soil over the next 5 years.
Here are some excerpts from http://www.savesoil.org:
- 52% of agricultural soils are already degraded.
- Over 2 billion people suffer from nutritional deficiencies.
- A tablespoon of soil contains more microbes than there are humans on the planet.
In this inclusive undertaking of Save Soil Movement, governments, UN agencies, global leaders, organizations, eminent members of the environmental and scientific community, corporate and individual citizens are uniting behind a common purpose to address the alarming crisis of Soil Extinction. For our children and future generations, it is critical to leave behind a planet capable of producing nutritious food and sustaining all life.
The Save Soil Movement will work toward this by:
- Turning the world attention to our dying soil.
- Inspiring about 4 billion people (60% of the world’s electorate of 5.26 billion) to support policy redirections to safeguard, nurture and sustain soils.
- Driving national policy changes in 193 nations toward raising and maintaining the organic content of soils to a minimum of 3-6%.
Everyone is encouraged to join and become an Earth Buddy to spread the word. Brochures, flyers, educational materials, and more are available in the Toolkit section of the website. Join us on social media to stay up on the latest activities or check us out when we are at the Hana Farmer’s Market. Save Soil!
