~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ INFO ON MAUI HIKINA MAKAHIKI ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aloha mai kākou,
Please join us for the Maui Hikina Makahiki Opening on Friday, November 17 from 10am to 1pm at Kahanu Garden. This will be our largest event yet with the majority of keiki from Hāna School and Ke Kula Kaiapuni o Hāna participating this year, we are so excited! See the event flyer attached.
The ‘Aha Makahiki (Ceremony) will begin promptly at 10am so please plan to arrive at least 15-20 minutes prior to park your vehicle and get settled. We will have seating and tent coverage for kūpuna during the ceremony, but all others should be prepared to either stand or bring a chair to sit. If you would like to participate, the Oli Makahiki, or oli that are done during the ceremony are linked.
Following the ‘Aha Makahiki, we will make our way over to the Hālau Wa’a for the ‘Aha ‘Āina where we will have ‘ai māmā, a light portion of ceremonial foods for everyone to enjoy. We encourage participants to bring a filled water bottle and a more substantial lunch if needed.
Wā Pāʻani (Makahiki Games) will begin after the ʻAha ʻĀina. The last two oli, Oli Lanakila (chant done for the winner) and Oli Ho’olilo (chant done for the non-winners), are fun and specific to the games.
Parking will be near the restrooms before entering the bottom portion of the garden. For kūpuna, closer parking will be near the Hālau Waʻa. Please come prepared for the elements like sun and rain. A pāpale and an umbrella are good things to have handy.
Please feel free to share the flyer, and donʻt hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
LONOIKAMAKAHIKI!
