Mahalawa Bridge work to disrupt traffic Nov. 19-22

Piilani Highway to be closed between Hana and Kaupo

Friday night through Monday morning

Goodfellow Brothers, LLC and the County of Maui’s Department of Public Works notify the public that on the afternoon of Friday, Nov. 19, a lowboy truck carrying an oversized load, with leading and trailing escort vehicles, will leave Waikapu bound for Keokea Park.

From Keokea, the convoy will proceed through Ulupalakua, Piilani Highway, and Hana Highway en route to the project site at Mile Marker Post 43 between Hana and Kaupo. Traffic along the route is expected to be impeded between 12 noon and 6 p.m. to accommodate transport of a 6′ by 45′ load of bulky bridge components.

An around-the-clock closure at the project site is slated from 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19, until 6 a.m. Monday, Nov. 22.

The contractor will be installing a temporary pre-engineered bridge over the existing Mahalawa Bridge, so no thru-traffic will be possible during this period.

Motorists should choose an alternate route. Visitors planning to visit Hana during the road closure should return to Central Maui by way of Hana Highway (not Piilani Highway) to avoid the area.

The Department of Public Works apologizes for any inconvenience to the public. For additional information, call the Department of Public Works Engineering Office at (808) 270-7745.
