Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Begins Planning Study for the Hāna Greenway Master Plan
By Heidi Lea, Executive Director of the Hāna Business Council
In 2023 efforts spearheaded by the Hāna Business Council found a champion in Pam Eaton at the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). In a vote by the Maui MPO board in February 2024, the Hāna Greenway Master Plan was added into the Unified Planning Work Program (UPWP). Residents of Hāna have been asking for safe passage along the Hana Highway in the form of sidewalks, offset paths, and alternative corridors for years. This plan is to define the phases of development, get these trails built, and ensure long-term maintenance, for the enjoyment and well-being of our community along these pathways in the decades ahead. The Hāna Community Plan ʻSocial Infrastructure’ section encourages establishing a recreation management plan. Our community has identified areas of consideration for this plan, including along main Hāna town corridors including:
- the improvement of the existing “sidewalk” that is along the neighborhood close to the Hāna Elementary & High School;
- the creation of a safe pathway between Paʻani Mai Park and the Subdivision;
- from the Hāna-Maui Hotel into town center;
- establishing a new corridors adjacent to the highway that includes theoffer of 4 miles of frontage road, currently predominantly owned by Hāna Ranch, from the police station through town past the turn onto Haneoʻo to Koki Beach and further where Haneoʻo turns down to Hamoa, along to Kapia Stream
- the additional ½ mile through Makaʻalae from Kapia to Waiohonu Bridge on land predominantly under ownership of Ke ʻAō Hāliʻi;
- north of town from Kalo Road to the Hāna School;
- Uakea Road from the police station to Hāna Bay, and around the ballpark, transected by Keawa Place from the Highway to the pier.
In addition to providing safety for those who would like to walk or bike around our community, we would like to have the following benefits:
- New opportunities for work development in the building and maintenance of this Greenway. Studies show how local employment and economic activity with the investment in bike infrastructure improves.
- Increasing safe routes to school for our children and staff.
- Supporting a healthier lifestyle.
