Hoʻomakaukau Maui Hikina ~ East Maui Ready (EMR) is an affiliation of our county workers, first responders, and East Maui residents who support the Hāna District – who are always on hand to respond when our neighbors and visitors are in need! As each new year begins we are reminded of the variability of the weather and how it affects the ʻāina. When there are storms which can pose the danger of potential flash flood conditions, then it is NOT a time to travel the roads or go explore near the streams of Maui Hikina (East Maui)!

As a service to the community, established around the year 2000, residents and emergency response leaders created an affiliate focus group of emergency preparedness – currently called Hoʻomakaukau Maui Hikina or East Maui Ready – EMR.
The team meets on the last Wednesday of each month at 5pm via Zoom to share ongoing topics pertaining to the health and safety of the Hāna District. All are welcome!
A goal of EMR is to have participants from each of 18 defined wahi (areas) – For purposes of this plan, East Maui has been divided into 18 village areas. These include: Hāna Town, Koʻolau/Keanaʻe/Wailuanui, Lower Nāhiku, Upper Nāhiku, Ulaino, Ka’eleku, Waianapanapa, Hāna School, Wākiu, Kawaipapa, Hana-Maui Resort, Haneo’o, Kapia, Maka’alae, Puʻuiki/ Haou/ Koali/ Mūʻolea, Kīpahulu, the Kīpahulu District of the Haleakala National Park, and Kaupo.
Join in the conversation with our local community associations, nonprofits, first responders, and residents, Hāna Police Department, Maui Electric, Hāna District Civil Defense Coordinator from the Maui Emergency Management Agency, Maui County Council, Mayor’s Office, and more!

It is unfortunately common for injuries and fatalities to occur when visitors underestimate the power and wildness of East Maui.

Please follow to these basic tips to ensure your safety:
Respect private property – stay on well-maintained trails and visitor facilities.
Learn about the ‘Road to Hāna’ ~ Hāna Highway Driving Etiquette.
Inform yourself about the regular flash flooding events in East Maui on the Maui County ‘Flash Flood Precautions’ page.
Pay attention to all weather advisories, including flash flood and high surf watches and warnings – check the County of Maui Emergency Management Agency for active advisories and watches before traveling or entering stream or ocean water.
While you’re visiting, sign up for the MEMA Alerts – Maui County Emergency Alert System to receive important updates, such as severe weather and unexpected road closures.

For tracking of incidents of operations which are creating noise disruptions around the Hāna District typically caused by Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey US Military Aircraft please fill in and share this EMR tracking survey. Reporting of input to this form will on the agenda at the monthly EMR meeting. If a Question has a red * it is required, additional information is optional.
