The Hāna Community Plan ʻSocial Infrastructure’ area encourages establishing a recreation management plan. The Hāna community, through the efforts spearheaded by Hāna Business Council members, have engaged in discussions with residents to identify areas of consideration for this plan, including along main Hāna town corridors including, 1) the improvement of the existing “sidewalk” that is along the neighborhood close to the Hāna Elementary & High School, 2) the creation of a safe pathway between Paʻani Mai Park and the Subdivision, 3) from the Hāna-Maui Hotel into town center, establishing 4) a new 3 mile corridor adjacent to the highway that includes the offer of 2.5 miles of frontage road currently owned by Hāna Ranch from the police station through town to the turn onto Haneoʻo to Koki Beach, and 5) from the police station to Hāna Bay and around the ballpark.

The Hāna Community Pathway Study funded through the Maui Metropolitan Planning Organization envisions a 5.5-mile multimodal pathway linking important resources and services like Hāna Elementary and High School, Hāna Health, and the farmers’ market, allowing both residents and visitors to safely walk, bike, or roll through their community. Currently, Hāna Highway is the only road connecting the daily services and destinations of its residents and visitors. This two-lane road is winding, narrow, and the speeds of cars on the highway frequently surpass the 25-mph limit.

The pathway aims to increase connectivity, accessibility, and safety by designating dedicated walkways and trails for pedestrians separate from the highway. Community members are encouraged to join in monthly HBC and EMR meetings to be part of this planning efforts. Meeting information can be found on the community calendar!
