SUMMARY:Hāna Limu Festival
DESCRIPTION:Hāna\, Maui – Nā Mamo O Mūʻolea\, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in Maui Hikina (East Maui)\, is pleased to announce the date and details of their Annual Hāna Limu Festival. \nThe 2024 festival will take place at Kapueokahi\, Hāna Bay Beach Park on Saturday\, July 20th\, 2024 from 10 am to 4 pm. \n‘O ka limu ka huli hoʻokawow ō honua \nThe limu is the huli that seeds the earth. \nThis year’s theme is inspired by the Kumulipo – Hawaiʻiʻs Creation Chant. \n“The first wā of the Kumulipo presents the limu of our coastlines. This concept is taken directly from lines 113 and 114 of this first wā which describes the bountiful limu of our coastlines that grow like ocean vines and are the huli that grows in the ocean.”\n-Dr. Huihui Kanahele-Mossman (Executive Director- Edith Kanakaʻole Foundation). \nThis year’s festival will feature live limu identification\, hands-on activities for both youth and adults\, Hawaiian music\, a silent auction\, handicrafts\, ‘ono food\, and t-shirts that once again feature the talents of Nā Mamoʻs president Hank Eharis Jr. Hāna residents and limu enthusiasts will conduct limu surveys at locations along the Hāna Coast in the early morning and be back in time to share their treasures and observations with festival goers! \nEvery year Nā Mamo designs the festival to provide a deeper awareness of our native limu species and hopes that people will be mindful of their kuleana and role in ensuring our ocean resources are here for generations to come. \nCollaborating partners and co-sponsors help with the event\, including the Hawaii Community Foundation\, County of Maui\, Maui Nui Makai Network\, The Nature Conservancy of Hawaii\, and Kua ʻĀina Ulu ʻAuamo. The event focuses on how our kai + wai = the health of our nearshore fisheries. These things are inherently connected and foundational to a momona landscape. Native limu is essential\, not only as an ‘ono\, nutritious part of the traditional Hawaiian diet but for its vital role in the health of the nearshore ecosystem\, serving as the base of the food chain and providing food and shelter for herbivore fish and invertebrates. \nEach year\, funds raised through a silent auction at the festival enable Nā Mamo O Mūʻolea to award the Isabelle Aiona Abbott Scholarship to Hāna students. Nā Mamo hopes to build capacity by encouraging them to follow in Dr. Abbottʻs footsteps by pursuing studies in marine biology\, natural resource management\, Hawaiian studies\, and other Health and Environmental fields of study. \nMahalo to our sponsors include the County of Maui Office of Economic Development\, and the Hawaii Community Foundation.

SUMMARY:Resilience Hub Workshop
DESCRIPTION:PRESS RELEASE \nFor Immediate Release \nApril 18\, 2022 \n  \nMaui Residents invited to participate in Resilience Hub talk story sessions \n  \nThe Maui County Office of Climate Change\, Resiliency and Sustainability will hold four community talk story sessions to discuss the formation of Resiliency Hubs in Maui County. \nThe four community events are set for: \n\nLahaina Kaunoa Senior Center at 788 Pauoa St. from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday\, April 20\nVelma McWayne Santos Community Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday\, April 21\nMitchell Pauole Community Center in Kaunakakai from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday\, April 22\nHana Bay Pavilion from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday\, April 25″\n\nResilience Hubs help communities respond to natural and other disasters to expedite emergency recovery\,” said Mayor Michael Victorino. “These hubs work best when they are customized to meet specific community needs. So please participate in the workshop closest to where you live. In this era of climate change and extreme weather\, there’s no such thing as being over-prepared for the unexpected.” \nCommunity input will help determine what services will be offered in Resiliency Hubs\, but they are envisioned as places\, most of the time\, for residents\, businesses and organizations to come together for workshops\, events and training. Hubs would be centers for emergency preparedness\, response and recovery. \nIn the event of a natural disaster\, Resilience Hubs would be emergency response centers to support immediate community needs such as connecting residents and businesses with supplies\, shelter\, information and support. During disaster recovery\, Resilience Hubs would be centers for recovery and ongoing community needs. \nThe talk story sessions are opportunities for the community to learn more about Resilience Hubs\, identify sites for them and determine what programs and services are needed to serve residents’ needs. \nFor more information on the Resilience Hub Network\, visit resilientmauinui.org\, follow us on Facebook or Instagram @countyofmaui\, or reach out to CCRS.office@mauicounty.gov\, (808) 270-7855.# # # \n
